In the meantime, there are a lot of controllers on the market that offer a new way to play, whether you’re upgrading from the stock DualShock4 controller to something more premium or grabbing a controller that caters to a specific type of game. It’s a confusing situation but one that Sony appears to be addressing in firmware updates we hope this will lead to full PS4 controller support on the PS5. Since the PlayStation 5 is backwards compatible with seemingly most of the PS4 library, and PS4 controllers will work for those games on a PS5 system, purchasing a new PS4 controller now is not a futile investment. Controllers designed wholly for motion, like the PlayStation Move and Wii Remote, may be better suited to motion controls.Both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 started out slow thanks to higher price tags and fewer game releases at launch, but the PS4 remains one of the most popular gaming consoles available, especially considering the limited availability of Sony’s new PS5. Gamers have yet to see a truly great implementation of motion controls in an otherwise traditional style controller. Lag and imprecision are frequently cited. Some PS3 games, notably Lair (2007), suffered from poor implementation of motion control. The motion capabilities of the PS3 controller have been used with moderate success but have not been a big success. The two controllers are a meld of old and new control styles – old buttons and sticks with new motion controls. Sixaxis and DualShock 3 can sense rotation and acceleration in any direction. The major technological differences between both PS3 controllers and the previous DualShock 2 are the addition of wireless and motion sensing. The PS3 controller offers both analog and digital buttons, sticks, and triggers similar to the Xbox 360 controller. When the lawsuit was resolved about a year later, the DualShock 3 was released with full rumble support. Sixaxis lacked any haptic feedback (‘rumble’) capabilities, likely due to a patent lawsuit. Sony designed two PlayStation 3 controllers: the Sixaxis controller, released at the PS3’s launch, and the DualShock 3 which replaced it in 2007.
